A school MIS with HR built in
Most schools keep pupils in their MIS and staff somewhere else: an HR system, a payroll provider’s portal, a spreadsheet for the single central record. PMC People is an MIS with HR built in, so staff and pupils are in one system, with one sign-in.
Why an MIS with HR makes sense
A school’s staff data is used all over the school. Cover needs to know who is off sick. Timetables need to know who teaches what. Safeguarding needs the single central record to be right for everyone in the building. The School Workforce Census needs contracts, roles and absences.
When HR and the MIS are separate systems, the same details are typed twice and drift apart. In PMC People they’re the same records. A teacher reported sick appears in the cover screen without being entered again, and the workforce census is built from the staff records HR already keeps.
PMC People started as HR software for schools; the school modules add everything a school MIS does.

Staff records
Jobs and job history, contracts, pay and grades, emergency contacts and bank details, encrypted, with every change in the audit log.
Single central record
The pre-appointment checks Keeping Children Safe in Education asks for, for staff, supply, volunteers, contractors and governors, with gaps picked out.
Recruitment and onboarding
Vacancies on your own careers page, applications, shortlisting and interview scores, references, and a welcome link for new starters.
Leave and sickness
Leave requests and approvals, sickness reporting, return-to-work notes and triggers such as the Bradford factor.
Training
The training each job needs, when it runs out, and a matrix for the whole school.
Casework and reviews
Disciplinary, grievance and capability cases following the ACAS Code, probation reviews and appraisals.
Payroll export
Starters, leavers and changes worked out each month and exported for your payroll provider, with payslips published to staff.
School Workforce Census
Checked against the DfE’s rules, with the file ready for COLLECT.
Self-service for staff
Every member of staff sees their own details, leave, payslips and training, and tells HR when something changes.
Where HR and the MIS meet
The places a separate HR system and MIS usually need copying between, joined up.
- Cover
- Staff off sick or on approved leave appear in daily cover straight away, with their lessons to arrange.
- Timetables and classes
- Teachers in the timetable are the same people as in the staff records, so a leaver doesn’t linger in the MIS.
- Safeguarding
- The designated safeguarding lead’s role, the single central record and the safeguarding log are in the same system, each seen only by the right people.
- One sign-in
- Staff sign in once, with their school Microsoft 365 account if you like, for their timetable, registers, leave and payslips.
- One set of roles
- Teachers, heads of year, the SENCO, HR, payroll and the data manager each see only their part of the same system.
- One supplier, one update
- One system to install, back up, update and support.
Questions about a school MIS with HR
Can we use the HR side without the school modules?
Yes. PMC People is a complete school HR system on its own, used by schools and businesses. The school modules can be added later.
Can we use the school modules and keep our current HR system?
The school modules are built on PMC People, which holds your staff records, so staff are always in PMC People. You can start with only the basics and use more of the HR side over time.
Who can see staff pay and bank details?
Only the roles that need them, such as HR and payroll. They’re encrypted, and every view and change is in the audit log.
Does it do payroll?
PMC People prepares each month’s starters, leavers and changes and exports them for your payroll provider, then publishes the payslips they send back.
